MIDDLE SCHOOL VISUAL ARTS ELECTIVES
Seventh and Eighth Grade Tri-Semester Art Program
Description:
The goal of these art classes is to provide an introductory level of expressive and creative opportunities with art tools using the basic elements of art, (line, color/value, shape/form, space, and texture) and principles of design, (balance, rhythm/movement, proportion, emphasis, pattern, and unity). This class is 12 weeks long and is designed to provide students of all ability levels a variety of hands on art experiences. Instruction will include demonstrations accompanied by studio work time. Students will complete projects in each media/instructional area. Evaluation will consider completion of the assignments, personal growth during the class and responsible participation. Students will construct and keep a folder of all lesson plans, sketches, and project rubrics. Some projects will be integrated with the core subjects, different cultures, eras of art, and artist styles.
Projects (may include the following):
- Drawing- using a variety of media, pencil, chalk, color pencil, oil pastel.
- Design Composition- focused on color textures, lines and shapes.
- Clay- work will be focused on hand built projects using slab and coil techniques.
- Sculpture- using Paper- Mache.
- Painting- tempera, watercolor, or acrylics.
* Students may take this class in both 7th and 8th grade. While the same concepts are taught, different techniques are introduced and used over the course of the two years.
Eighth Grade Year Long Class
Description:
The goal of the eighth grade yearlong art classes is to provide an upper level course of expressive and creative opportunities with art tools using the basic elements of art, (line, color/value, shape/form, space, and texture) and principles of design, (balance, rhythm/movement, proportion, emphasis, pattern, and unity). This class is for those students that are interested in reinforcing and elaborating on the skills that they learned in seventh grade at a higher thinking level. Teacher permission is required for entrance into this class. Instruction will include demonstrations accompanied by studio work time. Students will complete projects in each media/instructional area. Evaluation will consider completion of the assignments, personal growth during the class and responsible participation. Students will construct and keep a portfolio of their work along with a sketch book/journal and art folder. Some projects will be integrated with the core subjects, different cultures, eras of art, and artist styles. Students may present their completed portfolio for evaluation to possibly enroll in Art 2 at the high school.
Projects- (may include the following):
- Drawing- using a variety of media, pencil, color pencil, chalk, oil pastel, pen and ink.
- Painting- tempera, acrylics, and watercolor techniques will be explored in a variety of techniques.
- Illustration- using a variety of materials and media.
- Clay- work will be focused on hand building projects using slab, coil, pinch, and drape techniques. Decoration may involve glazing, Rub-n-Buff, or painting.
- Sculpture- Work may include Paper- Mache, wood, wire, or clay.
- Print making- one of the following techniques may be explored linoleum, stamp, glue line, or mono prints.
- Fibers- Weaving, basket making or painting with yarn may be explored.
