Core Curriculum

English/Language Arts (ELA)

The Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) for English are the foundation of the English Program. Students use the Holt, Winston, Rinehart Literature series to meet the GLCE's. The literature series includes elements of fiction, non-fiction, folktales, mythology, poetry, drama, fantasy and science fiction. The Collins Writing Program is an integral part of meeting the Writing expectations. Students are required to take the Reading and Writing MEAP test in the 7th and 8th grades. A written copy of the entire ELA Curriculum and Pacing Chart are available upon request.

 7th Grade Social Studies

The seventh grade Social Studies Curriculum is designed to acquaint students with the relationship between humans and the natural environment in which they live. The goal of this course is to give students a basic understanding of:

  • Persisting global issues
  • Local and national problems
  • The impact of the environment
  • To acquire basic geographical skills

Realizing that the world is indeed a combination of many integrated cultural groups the plan is to emphasize the relationship between the Eastern and Western Hemisphere and contributions of all racial, religious, and ethnic groups.

Objectives:

  • Develop study skills emphasizing maps, graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Develop an understanding that the present is clarified through knowledge of the past.
  • Recognize the need for rules and regulations.

Examples of classroom activities/approaches:

  • Student Reports
  • Independent map work with latitude/longitude
  • Outlining
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Video – Note taking/Testing
  • Creative Projects
  • Online Access at Prentice Hall for students/parents
  • Lecture /discussions

7th Grade Science

General Science is a full year course with an emphasis on life, earth, and physical science. This course is designed to prepare the students for the eight grade MEAP test. Core objectives of the program are based upon essential outcomes set by the State of Michigan:

1. Constructing New Scientific Knowledge

2. Reflecting on Scientific Knowledge

3. Using Life Science Knowledge- includes: cells, organization of living things, heredity, evolution, and ecosystems

4. Using Physical Science Knowledge- includes: matter and energy, changes in matter, motion and objects, and waves and vibrations

5. Using Earth Science Knowledge - includes: geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and weather, and the solar system, galaxy, and universe

7th Grade Math

The main focus in grade seven is the algebra concept of linear relations, including ideas about proportional relationships. Students will understand the relationship of equations to their graphs, as well as to tables and contextual situations for linear functions. Additionally, work in algebra extends to simplifying and solving simple expressions and equations. The main geometry concept in grade seven is similarity of polygons, which also draws on ideas about proportion. Students apply their understanding of ratios in data-based situations.

8th Grade Math

The focus in grade eight is algebra, geometry, and data. In Algebra, students explore non-linear functions with a concentration on quadratic functions. Functions are studied through various representations: symbolic, graphical, with tables, and verbal statements. In Geometry, students consolidate their knowledge of two and three dimensional shapes and their properties, and apply this knowledge to perimeter, area, volume, and visualization problems.
