Parkside Athletic Requirements & Eligibility

Parkside Athletic Requirements

At the start of each athletic season, the Athletic Coordinator (AC) will receive a list of student/athletes participating in the sport (including tryouts) so that a pre-season eligibility check may be conducted. Each student/athlete must have passed four of six classes from the previous trimester, and be passing four of six classes during the current trimester (ref. MHSAA). Those who do not meet this criteria would be placed on academic probation at the start of the season, will remain on probation for the remainder of the season, and would be subject to weekly academic eligibility checks.

Each student/athlete that meets the above MHSAA requirement must have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.00 for the trimester prior to the season of competition. Students/athletes who meet the MHSAA requirement but have failed to establish a grade point average of 2.0 during the previous trimester would be placed on academic probation at the start of the season, will remain on probation for the remainder of the season, and would be subject to weekly academic eligibility checks.

Weekly Academic Eligibility Check

During the season, grade checks will be conducted for student/athletes on academic probation by the AC after school on the last day of the school week. Ineligible students will be notified the next school day of their status. When grades are checked, the AC will contact those students who are not passing at least 4 classes and those that do not have a 2.0 GPA or above. The coach will also be notified of a student’s eligibility status. It is the responsibility of the classroom
teacher to maintain up-to-date Powerschool grade records.

Weekly Academic Probation

If student/athlete does not have a 2.0 GPA for the week or is not passing four of six classes, he/she will not be eligible to participate in contests the following week. (The week shall be defined as the Monday through Sunday following the Friday grade check.) The athlete would remain ineligible until the next weekly grade check indicates that he/she is passing four of six classes and has a GPA of 2.00 or above. While on weekly academic probation, a student may ask the AC for a grade check. If determined to be eligible, the student may resume competition, as long as the minimum number of practice days has been met.

In Season Academic Eligibility Check

At or near the halfway point of the sport specific season, an academic eligibility check will be conducted by the AC for students/athletes participating in that sport. The same criteria for  pre-season academic eligibility (passing four of six classes and 2.0 GPA) will be used. If a student/athlete does not meet the eligibility criteria, the student/athlete will be placed on academic probation for the remainder of the season and would be subject to weekly academic eligibility checks (as outlined above).

Parkside Athletic Eligibility

Eligibility Procedures

To increase student opportunities for success, the administration has implemented the following procedures: A student without a previous trimester grade record at Parkside may participate for the first trimester without reference to his/her record in the previous grade. Transfer students will be given a one trimester grace period for meeting the 2.0 GPA requirements. IMPORTANT NOTE: Not all transfer students are automatically eligible. All new students should report to the Athletic Director prior to going out for a sport to determine eligibility

REFERENCE:
The MHSAA sets a minimum standard for academic eligibility which many schools adjust upward.
The minimum is that a student must have passed at least 20 credit hours (generally 4 classes) in the
previous semester and be passing the same number in the current semester, whenever a school
does regular academic eligibility checks (at least once in a 10-week period).
